CLINTON, Miss. -- The Mississippi Valley State women's cross country team came up just short of claiming its first-ever SWAC championship on Monday at the Watson Cross Country Course of Choctaw Trails.

MVSU finished second and claimed several awards.

Valley's Joyce Chumo, individually, placed first for the second consecutive year with a time of 17:44.79 in the 5k run. Winny Tauni came in fifth with a time of 18:55.36 and Jovanna Peterson claimed 17th with a 19:57.11 finish.

Other MVSU runners included:

23rd - Tamara Gillard (20:32.46)
31st - Savanah Gillard (20:49.50)

Meanwhile, Chumo was named Athlete of the Year and First Team All-SWAC. Tauni was also tabbed First Team All-SWAC.
