ITTA BENA – Things are starting to look up for the Mississippi Valley State football program.
Last week, the Delta Devils pounded rival Alcorn State 33-9 in its first win over the Braves since 2006. And now, the Delta Devils (3-6, 3-4 SWAC) are turning their focus to ending the season on a three-game win streak, which would give Valley its first winning conference record since 2006.
“If we can finish with three consecutive wins, that would be a big momentum boost going into recruiting (in) the offseason,” said MVSU head coach Karl Morgan.
To accomplish its goal, the Delta Devils will first need to beat a Prairie View A&M team Saturday that has won three of its last four games. The Panthers (3-6, 3-4 SWAC) fell against Alabama State, 21-35, last week. Kickoff between MVSU and Prairie View is set for 1 p.m. at Rice-Totten Stadium.
Valley, meanwhile, has yet to win consecutive games this season. But with the positive turnaround of the Delta Devils’ offense, Morgan hopes this is the week things begin to change.
“The key now is to carry on some consistency against Prairie View,” he said. “(Last week) was a big win, a good win. Hopefully we can finish real strong at home on Senior Day against Prairie View.”
MVSU will honor all its seniors in a pregame ceremony before the 1 p.m. kickoff.
Morgan said he’s hoping the seniors can see the positives of their experience at Valley.
“I’m happy for the players,” said Morgan. “We still haven’t gotten completely over the hump, but I’m happy that we’re headed in the right direction. And those guys that are leaving us can look back and say ‘You know what, we didn’t win a whole bunch of games, but I was a part of the foundation, a part of the concrete that got Valley football on solid ground in the years to come.’”
MVSU will close out the season on Nov. 17 at Texas Southern. Kickoff time for that game is 1 p.m.
