Delta Devils on the road for a showdown at Southern on ESPNU

Game Notes

BATON ROUGE, La. -- It'll be short week for Mississippi Valley State, as the Delta Devils will be on the road at Southern University on Thursday night.

The 43rd matchup between the two SWAC teams will be shown live on ESPNU at 6:30 p.m. It’ll also be shown online on www.WatchESPN.com for those with video subscriptions with Time Warner, Verizon, Comcast and Brighthouse.

Coming off a 29-7 loss at SWAC preseason favorite Alabama State, MVSU is hoping to rebound against the homestanding Jaguars.

“We’ve battled them the last two years,” said MVSU coach Karl Morgan. “We feel like we can match up with them to a certain degree. So that gives us some confidence.”

MVSU senior running back Brandon Stansell is coming off a career-best performance. The Citrus College transfer rushed for 167 yards against a tough Alabama State defense.

“It’s probably the best performance of any Delta Devil since I’ve here here – offensively or defensively,” said Morgan.

Stansell’s big day also occurred on a big day for the 5-foot-7, 187-pound running back.

“It was his birthday,” Morgan said. “It was a nice birthday gift to come out and get 167 yards rushing.”

There were also some positives on the defensive side of the ball last week. Carlos Hollis and Rico Mazique each had an interception and ASU’s heralded running back Isaiah Crowell was limited to only 60 rushing yards.

The Hornets were also limited to just three second half points.
