Box Score GRAMBLING, La. -- Mississippi Valley State had its largest scoring output of the season Saturday.
Unfortunately, it wasn't enough to fend off Grambling State at the newly-dedicated Eddie Robinson Stadium as the Delta Devils were upended, 47-40.
In their final road game of the season, MVSU (1-8, 1-7 SWAC) had 371 yards of total offense, but gave up 407 yards including 319 to quarterback Johnathan Williams, who had seven TDs on the day. The Tampa native, who filled in for D.J. Williams, threw for five scores and added two more on the ground.
Grambling had its largest lead, 16 points, when Johnathan Williams connected with Chad Williams on a 9-yard TD pass to give the Tigers a commanding 40-24 lead.
But Valley responded on the first play of the fourth quarter when quarterback Patrick Ivy scampered for a 5-yard TD to cut the lead to 40-32 following a 2-point conversion catch by Jerrell Moore.
Johnathan Williams extended the Tigers' lead to 47-32 on another TD run -- this one from 11 yards out with over 12 minutes left.
With 7 minutes remaining, Ivy rushed for his second score of the game to cut the lead to 47-40 following a 2-point conversion run by Cortez Frizell.
The Delta Devils had one last opportunity on the final drive of the game, but were unable to score following a pair of incomplete passes after driving to the GSU 29-yard line.
Ivy led MVSU with four TDs including two on the ground. He finished 15 of 35 for 266 yards while Patrick Durr paced the Delta Devils with 70 rushing yards.
Julian Stafford had six receptions for 113 yards while Jerrell Moore chipped in three catches and a career-high 110 yards and a TD. Richard Drake chipped in three receptions for 36 yards and a score.
MVSU will be back in action next Saturday when they host Texas Southern at 1 p.m. at Rice-Totten Stadium.
