Simpson, Boykin named All-SWAC, others honored by CSM

ITTA BENA – A pair of Mississippi Valley State defensive standouts were honored by the SWAC Friday after being named All-SWAC for the performances during the 2013 season.

Defensive lineman Robert Simpson and cornerback Avery Boykin were both tabbed First Team All-SWAC.
Simpson, a Gulfport native, came into the season as one of the most highly-touted players in FCS. He finished his senior campaign with 65 tackles (14.5 for loss), 4.5 sacks, two fumble recoveries, five pass breakups and a pair of blocked kicks. In the final two games of the season – against Texas Southern and Alabama State – Simpson combined for 20 tackles (6 for loss) and three sacks.

Meanwhile, in his first year at Valley, Boykin proved to be one of the most dominant defensive backs in the country. The junior standout led the SWAC with six interceptions to go with 57 tackles and seven pass breakups. He returned an interception 52 yards for a TD at Alabama A&M on Oct. 5.

Simpson named Third Team FCS All-American
MVSU's Simpson was also named to the College Sports Madness FCS Football All-American Third Team. He was the only player from the SWAC to be recognized.

College Sports Madness names 5 Delta Devils All-SWAC
Five MVSU student-athletes have been named College Sports Madness All-SWAC. Members of the First Team include: Simpson, Boykin and return specialist Julian Stafford, who finished the season with 32 kickoff returns for 738 yards and a TD.

Stafford, as a wide receiver, was also the lone Delta Devil to be named to the Second Team. He led Valley with 52 receptions for 694 yards and three TDs.

Meanwhile, offensive tackle Antonio Griggs and safety Kevin Eugene were named to the Third Team. Eugene capped his career off with 48 tackles, six pass breakups and an interception.
