MVSU's late rally not enough to upend UAPB

Box Score GREENWOOD, Miss. -- Davon Haynes scored a game-high 26 points Saturday to lead Arkansas-Pine Bluff to a 78-73 win over Mississippi Valley State at the Leflore County Civic Center.
MVSU had a chance to tie the game in the final seconds after UAPB's Tevin Hammond missed a pair of free throws, but Jeffrey Simmons turned the ball over and the Delta Devils' saw its SWAC opening game slip through its hands.
Simmons led Valley (4-10, 0-1 SWAC) with 20 points while DeAngelo Priar added 16. James Currington had 11 points and a game-high seven rebounds.

Valley found itself down by as much as 12 in the first half before the Delta Devils stormed back. Cordarius Samples and James Currington each converted 3-point plays and MVSU made nearly all of its free throw attempts in the final stretch of the first half.

The Golden Lions led the Delta Devils by eight with less than a minute left in the game before Valley took advantage of UAPB's missed free throws.

A dunk by Currington following Ghiavonni Robinson's missed free throw cut UAPB's lead to 76-73 with 31 seconds remaining.

Then, the Golden Lions' missed another pair of free throws by Tevin Hammond, but an MVSU turnover dashed any hopes of a Delta Devil comeback.
MVSU shot 44.4 percent while UAPB made 57.8 percent of its shots.
The Delta Devils will be on the road at Alabama State on next Saturday.
