ITTA BENA -- Robert Simpson first began to garner widespread attention following his junior season in 2012 when the Mississippi Valley State standout had a breakout campaign.
His 22.5 tackles for loss ranked him second in the nation and he was tabbed an FCS All-American and First Team All-SWAC. He also was the integral piece of a Delta Devil defense that was ranked No. 2 among all FCS teams. He followed it up with another stellar season in 2013 with 65 tackles (14.5 for loss), 4.5 sacks and a pair of fumble recoveries.
Now, the Biloxi native hopes he has did enough to gain the attention of NFL teams as he prepares for the NFL Draft, which is set for May 8-10.
Earlier this month, on March 5, he participated in Mississippi State's pro day where he showcased his abilities to NFL teams. The results from the pro day haven't been released yet, but Simpson thinks he did well enough to attract a team to give him a chance.
"They're saying that I'll probably end up signing as a free agent," said Simpson, who added that the Buffalo Bills, Indianapolis Colts and Seattle Seahawks are a few of the teams that have shown interest.
Simpson, who played defensive end and defensive tackle last season, is projected to play either defensive end or outside linebacker on the next level.
"I'm just trying to work on my footwork and strength," said Simspon, who prefers to play defensive end or any type of outside rusher.
Simpson has signed to be represented by Bus Cook, who also is the agent for top projected draft pick Jadeveon Clowney and Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton.
Now that the pro day is over there's nothing much left for Simpson to do but take a wait-and-see approach as the draft nears. But he's not putting all his eggs in one basket. Simpson said he's open to the possibility of playing in the CFL (Canadian Football League) as a last resort.
"Some (CFL) teams have reached out to me. If I had to go that route, then I probably would," he said.
