Football History (1958–Present)

Rice–Totten Stadium at Chuck Prophet Field stands as one of the most historically significant venues in HBCU football and remains central to the tradition of Mississippi Valley State University football in the Mississippi Delta.

The facility opened in 1958 as Magnolia Stadium, constructed to support the growing athletics program at Mississippi Valley State University. Located in Itta Bena, Mississippi, the stadium has continuously served as the home field for the Mississippi Valley State Delta Devils. With a seating capacity of approximately 10,000, the venue has hosted generations of collegiate football and remains a cornerstone of campus life and community pride.

In 2000, the stadium was renamed Rice–Totten Stadium in honor of former Delta Devils standouts Jerry Rice and Willie Totten. During the early 1980s, the legendary quarterback–receiver duo rewrote the NCAA Division I-AA record book, producing one of the most prolific passing offenses in college football history and elevating Mississippi Valley State to national prominence.

Jerry Rice went on to a celebrated 20-year career in the National Football League, earning recognition as one of the greatest players in the history of the sport and induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Willie Totten also pursued professional football before transitioning into coaching and later returned to his alma mater as head football coach from 2002 to 2009. He is among the rare coaches to lead a team in a stadium bearing his own name.

In 2005, the playing surface was officially renamed Charles “Chuck” Prophet Field, honoring the longtime athletic director and sports information director whose leadership and dedication helped shape Mississippi Valley State athletics during a pivotal era.

Today, Rice–Totten Stadium at Chuck Prophet Field remains a living landmark of Delta Devils football, reflecting a proud past while continuing to host new chapters in the program’s history.
