ITTA BENA – Joncyee Sanders led Mississippi Valley State with 18 points, 12 rebounds and six assists Thursday night against her former team, Delta State, but it wasn’t enough get the Devilettes past the Lady Statesmen.
DSU hung on to for a 58-52 exhibition victory at the Harrison HPER Complex in a game that included eight lead changes.
Davina Jefferson added 14 points and three assists while Oliva Kennedy, A’Shanti Weathers and Dominique Walker each scored five for the Devilettes.
MVSU shot 38.2 percent from the field and hit 4-of-13 from downtown. The Devilettes finished 6-of-13 from the free throw line.
Three DSU players scored in double figures with Rhandi Ball leading the way with 17 points. Seneca Walton chipped in 15 while Chelsey Rhodes finished with 12 for the Lady Statesmen, who shot 31.8 percent from the field.
MVSU’s largest lead of five points came early in the second half, while DSU led by as much as eight with nine minutes left in the game.
The Devilettes will be off until Nov. 9 when they travel to Chicago to open up the regular season in the Maggie Dixon Classic. MVSU will face Dayton at 3:30 p.m.
