MEMPHIS -- The Mississippi Valley State softball team got its first-ever win over the University of Memphis on Tuesday with a convincing 8-1 win over the Lady Tigers.
The win was the first of the season for the Devilettes (1-8). Alicia Lorenz earned the victory after allowing only three Memphis (2-9) hits.
Memphis took an early 1-0 lead, but the rest of the game beloned to Valley.
MVSU scored three runs in the fourth inning to take a 3-1 lead. Back-to-back one-out doubles by Ashley Hobbs and Alexandra Sullivan drove in the three runs. Nicole Burr later added a two-run homer in the top of the sixth inning to give the Devilettes a 5-1 lead. Burr then added a RBI double in the seventh inning and Hobbs had a two-run single in the frame to cap the scoring for MVSU.
Burr finished 2-for-2 in the game with three RBI and two runs scored. Hobbs went 2-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored.
MVSU will be back in action on Friday when they face Southern Miss at 5 p.m. on the first of a three-day tournament.
