HATTIESBURG -- The Mississippi Valley State softball team wasn't satisfied with just one win over a Conferece-USA opponent.
The Devilettes (2-8) defeated Southern Miss, 6-1, in the first of a three-day tournament to win their second consecutive game against a team from C-USA. MVSU defeated Memphis, 8-1, on Tuesday.
MVSU's Kimberly Spivey, who was named the SWAC's Preseason Pitcher of the Year, earned the win while Alicia Lorenz got the save.
The Golden Eagles (2-4) allowed the Devilettes to score all six runs in the third inning after holding MVSU scoreless through the first two frames. Valley used a six-hit rally, including two stand-up doubles, to secure a 6-0 lead.
Southern Miss scored its lone run in the fourth inning on an illegal pitch.
Jessika Sandoval, Alexandria Robertson and Ashley Hobbs had two hits apiece for the Devilettes. Sandoval and Robertson also had a pair of RBIs each.
MVSU will face IUPUI at 9 a.m. on Saturday in Hattiesburg before taking on Louisiana Tech at 11:30 a.m.
