Devilettes perfect at SWAC Round-Up

HATTIESBURG -- The Mississippi Valley State softball team left the SWAC Round-Up on Sunday with a perfect 4-0 record.

On the weekend, the Deviletttes (17-15, 4-0 SWAC) defeated Arkansas-Pine Bluff, Grambling State, Prairie View A&M and Texas Southern.

Game 1
MVSU 8, UAPB 1

After going into the top of the fifth inning tied at 1, the Devilettes ran away from the Golden Lions -- scoring three runs thanks to a shot to centerfield by Natalia Covarrubias.

Valley scored three additional runs in the seventh on a double each by Yasmin Battle and Kayla Mercado.

In 3.1 innings, Alicia Lorenz  gave up two hits and struck out two batters.

Game 2
MVSU 6, Grambling State 0

The Devilettes blew out the Lady Tigers, thanks in part to a five runs in the fourth inning. Alexandra Sullivan finished with three of MVSU's nine hits. Xiomara Perez and Alexandria Robertson had a pair of RBIs each. Kimberly Spivey, who worked five innings and gave up four hits with three strikeouts, earned the win on the mound.

Game 3
MVSU 6, Prairie View 0

In the first game on Sunday, Valley dominated Prairie View with five runs in the fourth inning and the final run coming in the fifth.

Kimberly Spivey pitched a complete game and gave up just two hits with eight strikeouts. Briana Holmes had two RBIs for the Devilettes.

Game 4
MVSU 3, Texas Southern 2

The Devilettes closed the weekend with a narrow victory over the Lady Tigers. Alica Lorenz pitched a complete game and struck 10 batters.

MVSU finished with nine hits and Nicole Burr and Kishti Kamaka had two each.

Valley will return to the diamond on Wednesday when they host Mississippi State at 5 p.m.
