ITTA BENA -- The Mississippi Valley State softball team pushed the Mississippi State Lady Bulldogs into extra innings Wednesday, before falling 4-3 in the eighth inning.

The Devilettes (17-16, 4-0 SWAC) held a 3-1 lead in the bottom half of the fifth inning thanks to a two-run homer to centerfield by Nicole Burr, but MSU answered back quickly.

The Lady Bulldogs (19-15) followed up with a two-run shot of their own in the top of the sixth by Brittney Bell.

Tied at 3, the teams went into extra innings when MSU's Heidi Sharpe knocked in what turned out to be the game-winning run on a fielders choice.

The Devilettes had a chance to either tie or win the game in the bottom of the 8th, but a double play ended MVSU's chances.

Alicia Lorenz (9-8) pitched the entire game and gave up three earned runs on six hits with seven strikeouts.

The Devilettes will be off this weekend and will return to the diamond on Tuesday when they travel to Central Arkansas. First pitch is set for 4 p.m.
