Devilettes grab firm grip on first place

ITTA BENA -- The Mississippi Valley State softball team gave itself some cushion in the SWAC Eastern standings with a doubleheader sweep over Jackson State on Saturday.

The Devilettes (23-17) defeated the Lady Tigers 14-9 in the first game before closing out the series with a 6-1 victory. MVSU still sits at first in the conference and holds a three-game lead over JSU in the SWAC Eastern standings.

MVSU scored seven runs in the fifth inning and the Devilettes cruised to the victory. Alexandra Sullivan went 3-for-4 at the plate with four RBIs. Jessika Sandoval also had three hits with three RBIs.

Kayla Mercado chipped in two hits with three RBIs.

Kimberly Spivey (9-8) got the win, working five complete innings. She gave up five earned runs on four hits with six strikeouts. Alicia Lorenz earned the save.

Alicia Lorenz (13-8) pitched a complete game, giving up one run on three hits with two strikeouts.

Yasmin Battle went 3-for-3 at the plate with two RBIs. Sullivan had a pair of hits to go with one RBI.

MVSU scored all six of its runs in the fourth and fifth inning.

The Devilettes are scheduled to host Delta State on Tuesday at  5 p.m. at Devilette Field.
