MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- The Mississippi Valley State softball team closed out the regular season with a three-game sweep over Alabama State, giving the Devilettes the SWAC Eastern crown and a perfect 16-0 conference record.
MVSU (30-17, 16-0 SWAC) defeated the Lady Hornets 14-1 on Friday before winning games two and three, 13-4 and 6-4, on Saturday. The Devilettes are now riding a 13-game win streak.
It marks the fourth time Valley has reached 30 wins under head coach Lee Smith since he took over the program during the 2001-02 season.
In Friday's game, Ashley Hobbs went 5-for-5 at the plate while Kishti Kamaka went 4-for-4. They accounted for nine of the Devilettes' 15 hits. Alicia Lorenz earned the win, allowing just one earned run on three hits with six strikeouts.
In Game 1 of Saturday's doubleheader, MVSU stayed hot at the plate with 14 hits. Kamaka had two hits and five RBIs for Valley, while Yasmin Battle paced the Devilettes with three hits. Kimberly Spivey was the winning pitcher, giving up three earned runs on nine hits with seven strikeouts.
In the final matchup, Lorenz earned her second victory of the series, allowing four earned runs on six hits with three strikeouts. Valley finished with 12 hits, led by Diana Parada -- who finished 4-for-4. Alexandra Sullivan went 2-for-4 for the Devilettes.
The SWAC Softball Tournament is scheduled for May 10-13 at the Shea Brothers Softball Complex in Irondale, Ala.
