Devilettes claw Lady Tigers in SWAC Tournament

Box Score

IRONDALE, Ala. – Nearly two weeks off apparently hasn't slowed down the Mississippi Valley State softball team.

The Devilettes (31-17) defeated Grambling State Thursday night 7-3 on the first day of the SWAC Softball Tournament at the Shea Brothers Softball Complex. Valley will face Alabama A&M Friday night at 8 p.m.

The win marked the Devilettes’ 14th consecutive victory.

After Grambling scored the first run of the game in the top of the second inning, MVSU responded with three runs in the bottom of the inning. Rachelle Harris knocked in the first run with a single to left field. Brianna Holmes brought in the final two runs of the inning with a double down the right field line.

Alexandra Sullivan’s RBI double in the third inning gave the Devilettes a 4-1 lead.

MVSU put the game out of reach in the fourth inning with three additional runs. Shana Ladner’s sacrifice fly brought in Diana Parada, who doubled earlier in the inning – giving the Devilettes a 5-2 lead. Nicole Burr then flushed away the Lady Tigers’ hopes of a comeback with a two-run homer to center field.

Kimberly Spivey (12-8) pitched a complete game and gave up three earned runs on eight hits with 11 strikeouts.

Holmes and Parada had a pair of hits each for the Devilettes.
