Devilettes' NCAA run comes to a close

LAFAYETTE, La. – The 2012 season has come to a close for the Mississippi Valley State softball team.

The Devilettes (34-19) were dealt a 5-0 loss by Baylor on Saturday in the Louisiana-Lafayette Regional of the NCAA Softball Tournament.

“We were glad to come out and compete on Day 2,” said MVSU coach Lee Smith. “Of course, we didn’t get the result we wanted but it was great to have our players come down and represent our university, our conference. …Our university has been out of Regionals the last two years so it was great to be back (here).”

Baylor took advantage of four MVSU errors and used 10 hits to dish the Devilettes their second loss of the tournament.

“I thought right at the beginning we had some pregame jitters,” said Smith. “I thought we were pressing a little bit.”

Kishti Kamaka, who hit a double, and Jessika Sandoval accounted for Valley’s two hits.

Alicia Lorenz (19-10) started on the mounded for the second straight day. She allowed eight hits and two earned runs in six innings while striking out four and issuing three walks. Kimberly Spivey relieved Lorenz in the final inning.

Despite the loss, the Devilettes are going back home with their heads up.

“When our conference started,” Lorenz said, “I felt like we did great. We deserved to be here. We definitely improved and started working together as a team really good.”
