Box Score 2 JACKSON, Miss. -- The Mississippi Valley State softball team dropped a pair of games Saturday to Cleveland State and UTEP in a tournament hosted by Jackson State.
The Devilettes fell 2-1 to Cleveland State before dropping a 12-9 decision to UTEP.
Cleveland State won despite only two hits, with the Vikings scoring off an MVSU error and a sacrifice fly in the third inning. Valley scored its lone run in the first inning on a Alexandria Robertson fly out brought Yasmin Battle home for the first run of the game.
Alicia Lorenz (3-10) suffered the loss, allowing one earned run on two hits in seven innings of work. She finished with four strikeouts.
Then in the final game of the day, against UTEP, the Devilettes came alive late, scoring six runs in the final two innings. But UTEP's 14 hits and 10 runs in the final three innings were too much to overcome.
Alexandra Sullivan hit her first homerun of the season for the Devilettes and Xiomara Perez accounted for two of MVSU's seven hits.
Valley, however, gave up 14 hits, including three homeruns.
Cassandra Rivera (0-2) gave up four earned runs on three hits in one inning of work.
The Devilettes will play both teams again Saturday. The Devilettes will face off against UTEP at 12:30 and Cleveland State at 3 p.m.
