Devilettes atop SWAC Eastern standings after series win over JSU

The Devilettes (18-25, 9-3 SWAC) now sit atop the SWAC Eastern standings after a 2-1 series win over rival Jackson State on Friday and Saturday.

The Lady Tigers blanked MVSU 8-0 Friday before the Devilettes rebounded with a pair of wins Saturday: 4-0 in game one and 4-1 in game two.

In Saturday's first game, Valley scored all four runs in extra innings when they poured in four runs in the eighth inning. An RBI-double by Xiomara Perez and a bases loaded walk gave MVSU its first two runs before Natalia Covarrubias knocked in the final two runs of the game using an RBI-single.

Yasmin Battled led Valley with two of its five hits. Alicia Lorenz earned the win on the mound, allowing six hits with five strikeouts.

The in the final game, Tracey Williams hit an RBI-single and Battle brought in an additional two runs in the fifth inning with a triple. Nicole Burr's RBI-single in the sixth inning ended Valley's scoring on the day.

Burr accounted for a pair of the Devilettes' seven hits.

Lorenz earned her second win of the day, allowing one earned run on six hits with three strikeouts.

The Devilettes will be back in action Wednesday at Mississippi State. Start time is set for 6 p.m.
