MVSU beats Prairie View twice to advance to title game

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 DECTAUR, Ala. -- The Mississippi Valley State softball team is still in the hunt for its eighth SWAC Tournament championship in the last 10 years following a pair of wins Friday over Prairie View A&M. 

The Devilettes (24-30) defeated the Lady Panthers 7-3 in the first game and held on to upend Prairie View 2-1 in the final game.

MVSU will face Alabama State at 2 p.m. Saturday for the title. The game will be broadcasted live on ESPN3.com and will be shown on tape-delay on ESPNU at  9 p.m. ASU routed Jackson State 11-2 to advance to the championship matchup. 

Valley won four straight games after falling to Prairie View on Wednesday, the opening day of the tournament. The Devilettes defeated Alcorn State and Texas Southern on Thursday before knocking out the Lady Panthers on Friday.

Game One
Alicia Lorenz threw a no-hitter in nearly a complete game to keep Valley alive in the tournament. In 6.2 innings, the All-SWAC First Team pitcher finished with seven strikeouts and no runs or hits allowed. 

Natalia Covarrubias and Alexandria Robertson paced the Devilettes with two hits each while Brittany Lilly finished three RBIs, which all came on a triple in the seventh inning. 

Prairie View scored all three of its runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. 

Game two
Lorenz (13-16) was on the mound again for the Devilettes in game two, earning her third victory of the tournament. She allowed just one earned run on three hits with 12 strikeouts in seven innings of work. 

Nicole Burr accounted for two of Valley's seven hits in the game. 

The Devilettes scored its first run of the game in the third inning on a Prairie View throwing error and Robertson's fourth inning homerun gave MVSU a 2-0 lead. 

Prairie View's Alisa Navarro hit a solo homerun in the bottom of the fourth for its lone run of the game.
