Devilettes blanked 10-0 by Lady Jags in NCAA Regional

Box Score MOBILE, Ala. -- Friday didn't end the way Mississippi Valley had hoped.

The Devilettes (25-31), who won five games last week advance to the NCAA Softball Tournament, were served a 10-0 defeat to regional host South Alabama (46-7) in six innings in front of an announced crowd of 1,157.

USA's Meghan Collins hit a 3-run homerun in the bottom of the sixth inning to seal the victory for the Lady Jags. Meanwhile, Hannah Campbell threw a no-hitter for USA, striking out six of 18 MVSU batters.

"She threw the pitches she needed to throw in the right spot," said MVSU coach Lee Smith.

The loss will put the Devilettes in the loser's bracket against Mississippi State. The matchup is set for Saturday at 3:30 p.m. on ESPN3.com. The Bulldogs defeated MVSU 1-0 earlier this season.

"Overall, I thought our kids were fighting," said Smith. "We'll come back out tomorrow and do what we have to do to win."

Against USA, MVSU pitcher Alicia Lorenz (13-17) gave up seven hits and the Devilettes committed three errors.

"We know we can definitely compete against these bigger teams," said MVSU catcher Nicole Burr. "Today, we just didn't show it."

On Saturday, the Devilettes will face a MSU team that fell to Florida State on Friday. The loser of the MVSU and MSU matchup will see their season come to a close while the winner will play again on Saturday.

"I think we'll come back tomorrow and be a different team," said Lorenz.
