Box Score MOBILE, Ala. -- Through nearly six full innings Saturday it looked as if the Mississippi Valley State softball team would finally get its chance at upsetting rival Mississippi State.
The Devilettes (25-32) led 1-0 going into the sixth inning before the Bulldogs scored two game-deciding runs in the bottom of the inning, including a solo homerun, to end the Devilettes' season with a 2-1 victory in the NCAA Tournament.
It marked the second time this season that MSU has defeated Valley by only one run.
"We've been right with them over the years," MVSU head coach Lee Smith said. "We knew it would be a tough battle."
Valley scored its lone run in the fourth inning on an RBI-single by senior catcher Nicole Burr. Meanwhile, MSU was unable to score until the sixth inning when Jessica Coley hit a homerun to centerfield tying the game at one. Shelby Fisher gave the Bulldogs a 2-1 lead later in the inning using an RBI-single.
The Devilettes had one last chance in the seventh inning, but a two strikeouts and pop out ended MVSU's season.
In Alicia Lorenz's final game of her career, the Paradise, Calif. native allowed two earned runs on seven hits with two strikeouts in six innings of work.
