Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Devilettes win second straight behind Reed's 25 points

ITTA BENA, Miss. -- Christina Reed's career high scoring mark lasted just one week.

The Indianola, Miss. native, who had 20 last week against Talladega College, poured in 25 points paired with seven rebounds to send the Mississippi Valley State women's basketball team to its second straight victory on Saturday. She made 11 of 17 shots in 35 minutes of action in a 71-65 win over Philander Smith College at The Pinnacle on the campus of Coahoma Community College.

It marked the fourth game this season that Reed has scored in double figures. She didn't do it alone, though. Ashley Beals was a dominate inside presence for the Devilettes (2-6), finishing with her third double-double of the season: 19 points, 12 rebounds.

"Everything starts inside with (Reed) and Ashley," said MVSU head coach Elvis Robinson. "We just have to grow up as a team and stop turning the ball over so much because that'll cost us in the future."

Taylor Green chipped in 11 points and seven rebounds for Valley.

MVSU had a double-digit lead at halftime, but the Lady Panthers clawed their way back into the game, cutting the lead to just four points after an Ashley Qualls three-pointer. Reed, however, responded with a pair of game-icing free throws to put Philander Smith away for good.

Caryan Jones paced the Lady Panthers with 22 points.

MVSU will be back in action Monday at Mississippi State. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. and the game will be broadcasted live on SEC Network Plus and ESPN3.
