MVSU softball wins one of five at Kickoff Classic

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3 | Box Score 4 STARKVILLE, Miss. -- The Mississippi Valley State softball team won one of five games Friday through Sunday during the Kickoff Classic at Mississippi State.

The Devilettes fell 8-0 to both Jacksonville State and Mississippi State on Friday before upending Northern Kentucky, 5-2, on Saturday to capture its first victory of the 2014 season. MVSU then fell 16-4 to Jacksonville State to close out Saturday's games.

Valley was unable to rally back to defeat Northern Kentucky in the final game, losing 3-1.

Friday: Jacksonville State 8, MVSU 0
JSU racked up five runs in the third inning and finished with ten hits. MVSU was unable to garner a hit and Cassandra Rivera suffered the loss on the mound.

Friday: MSU 8, MVSU 0
The Bulldogs scored all eight of its runs in the final three innings and its final three runs on walks. Natalia Covarrubias accounted for Valley's lone hit in the game and Rivera suffered the loss. MSU scored five runs in the fifth inning, starting on a two-run single.

Saturday: MVSU 5, Northern Kentucky 2
The Devilettes got it going early, scoring all five of its runs in the first inning. A Brandi Williams walk brought in Valley's first run followed by a hit-by-pitch on Courtenay Brooks that gave MVSU an early 2-0 lead. Jahcenda Garrett then knocked in two additional runs on a single. Annaisa Sanchez brought in the final run of the inning when she grounded out.

NKU scored two runs in the fifth inning using a homerun and a fly ball, but the Devilettes held on to its lead to secure its first win of the season.

Tenna Patterson was credited with the win, allowing two earned runs with three strikeouts in five innings of work. Rivera earned the save.

Saturday: Jacksonville State 16, MVSU 4
JSU got hot early, scoring 14 of its 16 runs in the first three innings. Brandi Williams knocked in a pair of runs in the first inning for MVSU on a single up the middle and Deja Talton brought in the final run for the Devilettes in the fifth inning on a RBI-triple.

Omeshia Moffett, who had a team-high two hits, also had a RBI-single for Valley in the fifth inning.

Sunday: Northern Kentucky 3, MVSU 1
Yasmin Battle had two of MVSU's four hits in a game that came down to the wire. Annaisa Sanchez had a single in the seventh inning that gave the Devilettes hope, but a Tracy Williams strikeout closed out the game.

Williams did, however, knock in Valley's lone run of the game on a ground out to second base in the fifth inning.

The Devilettes will be at Northwestern State on Friday, Feb. 14 and Saturday, Feb. 15.
