Devilettes suffer setback at softball tournament

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3 | Box Score 4 HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- The Mississippi Valley State softball team lost a pair of games Friday and Saturday at a tournament hosted by Willam Carey. 

The Devilettes fell to LSU-Alexandria 8-1 on Friday before succumbing to Spring Hill College, 13-1. MVSU (2-22) closed out the weekend with a 7-6 loss to the University of Mobile and a 9-1 loss to William Carey. 

LSU-Alexandria 8, MVSU 1 
Courtenay Brooks scored Valley's lone run in the second inning after Jahcenda Garrett was caught stealing at second base. LSU-Alexandria pounded out four runs in the first and sixth inning. MVSU finished with three hits and Tenna Patterson gave up five earned runs on 10 hits in the loss. 

Spring Hill College 13, MVSU 1 
Spring Hill scored 11 runs in the third inning en route to the five-inning victory over the Devilettes. Talton and Brandi Williams accounted for MVSU's two hits on the night. Cassandra Rivera gave up 10 earned runs and six walks in the loss. 

Mobile 7, MVSU 6 
MVSU found itself down 4-0 early, but fought its way back starting in the fourth inning with a pair of runs. Natalia Covarrubias had an RBI-single and Garrett followed with a sacrifice fly that gave the Devilettes some momentum. MVSU eventually took a 5-4 lead after scoring three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Mobile, however, responded with three runs of its own in the top of the seventh and held on for the win. Yasmin Battle, Brandi Williams and Covarrubias each had two hits for Valley. Rivera took the loss, giving up three earned runs in the final three innings of the game. 

William Carey 9, MVSU 1 
William Carey scored seven of its nine runs in the first three innings and held MVSU to three hits. The Devilettes scored in the sixth inning on a ground out by Yasmin Battle. Patterson (1-9) gave up five earned runs on seven hits in three innings of action.
