Devilettes split on second day of SWAC Round Up

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 LONGVIEW, Texas -- The Mississippi Valley State softball team won one of two games Saturday on the second day of the SWAC Round Up at Lear Athletic Stadium. The Devilettes (4-23, 2-1 SWAC) held off Southern, 3-2, in the first game before Grambling State rallied back to defeat the Devilettes 6-5 in the final game of the day.

Jahcenda Garrett and Yasmin Battle had two hits apiece for Valley, who finished with seven in the game. MVSU scored two of its three runs in the fifth inning with the final run coming on a RBI-single by Natalia Covarubias. Tenna Patterson earned the winning, working five innings in relief. She allowed three hits and no earned runs with one strikeout.

GSU 6, MVSU 5
Grambling State committed four errors but scored four runs over the final three innings to dish the Devilettes their first conference loss of the season. GSU's Bridgette Simmons knocked in the game-winning run after she reached first base on a fielders choice. Brianna Holmes led Valley at the plate, going 2-for-3 while Courtenay Brooks added a pair of RBIs.

In the final day of the SWAC Round-Up on Sunday, the Devilettes will face Texas Southern (10 a.m.) and Prairie View A&M (12:30 p.m.)
