Box Score 2 NORMAL, Ala. -- The Mississippi Valley State softball team completed a three-game sweep over Alabama A&M on Saturday with a pair of road wins.
The Devilettes defeated the Lady Bulldogs 4-3 in the first game of the doubleheader before finishing off A&M 17-5 in the final game. Now, MVSU will be riding a three-game win streaking heading into next weekend's showdown against rival Jackson State, who entered the weekend undefeated in conference play.
Game One The Devilettes scored two eighth inning runs to escape with a 4-3 win using a fielders choice and a RBI-single by Courtenay Brooks. A&M scored a run in the bottom of the inning, but it wasn't enough to send the game into extra innings. Natalia Covarrubias paced MVSU with two hits and Talton -- who also had a RBI-double in the sixth inning -- had two RBIs. Tenna Patterson earned the win, giving up two earned runs on three hits with a pair of strikeouts in 4.0 innings of work.
Game Two MVSU scored a season-high 17 runs in a 17-5 route over the Lady Bulldogs in the series finale. The Devilettes racked up 13 runs in the second inning on their way to a five-inning victory. The Devilettes finished with 16 hits -- with Deja Talton and Omeshia Moffett accouting for three each. Meanwhile, Tracey Williams had a game-high four RBIs. Cassandra Rivera earned the win, giving up just one earned run on three hits with two strikeouts in three innings on the mound.
Valley will play its final series of the regular season starting Friday at 6 p.m. against Jackson State in Itta Bena. Then, on Saturday, April 26, JSU and MVSU will play live on ESPNU at 3:30 p.m.
