Box Score 3 MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- The Mississippi Valley State softball team suffered a three-game setback Friday and Saturday at Alabama State.
The Devilettes fell 10-5 on Friday before losing 8-0 and 14-6 on Saturday to end the series. MVSU will be back on the diamond Wednesday, April 9 at Kentucky.
Friday (ASU 10, MVSU 5)In a game that included seven errors, Alabama State made its mark on the game scoring nine of its 10 runs in the third and fifth innings. Omeshia Moffett went 2-of-3 and Yasmin Battle paced the Devilettes with two RBIs. Valley led 4-1 in the third inning after RBI-singles by Natalia Covarrubias and Deja Talton. ASU, however, responded with five innings in the bottom half of the inning and widened the gap with four additional runs in the fifth. Tenna Patterson (5-12) gave up four earned runs on six hits with one strikeout in 2.2 innings on the mound for the Devilettes.
Saturday (ASU 8, MVSU 0)The Lady Hornets scored seven of its eight runs in the first two innings in the first game of the day. MVSU finished with four hits -- including a double by Courtenay Brooks -- and had two errors in the loss. Cassandra Rivera (2-13) surrendered six earned runs on 10 hits with three strikeouts in 4.2 innings of work.
Saturday (ASU 14, MVSU 6)ASU scored six runs in the first inning and added eight more in the fourth inning to finish off a three-game sweep over the Devilettes. MVSU scored its first runs of the game on a two-run homer in the third inning by Deja Talton, her fourth of the season. The Devilettes added three more runs in the fourth inning using a fielders choice and a sacrifice bunt by Omeshia Moffett. MVSU's Jahcenda Garrett was perfect at the plate, going 3-for-3 while Tracey Williams chipped in two hits. Tenna Patterson (5-13) gave up 11 earned runs on eight hits with a pair of strikeouts in 3.2 innings on the mound.
