MVSU softball advances to SWAC title game

Box Score DECATUR, Ala. -- They did it again.

The Mississippi Valley State softball team defeated Jackson State for the second time this week on Saturday, 4-3, to advance to Sunday's SWAC Tournament championship game at Wilson Morgan Park.

The Devilettes, who are now riding a three-game win streak, will face Texas Southern on Sunday at 10 a.m. for a chance to win its third straight title and its ninth in the last 11 years.

"The journey is not over," said MVSU head coach Lee Smith. "We have to come out (Sunday) and put our best foot forward."

MVSU scored two runs in both the second and third inning and held off the Lady Tigers in the seventh to defeat JSU for the second time in the tournament. JSU took an early 2-0 lead in the first inning, but Valley tied the game in the second on a two-run ground out by Annaisa Sanchez.

Then, in the third the Devilettes scored two runs on a pair of bases loaded walks before JSU switched out pitchers.

JSU added a run in the sixth inning to cut the lead to 4-3 and had a final shot to either tie or take the lead in the seventh, but a Chelsea Smith pop out sealed the game.

Jahcenda Garrett and Yasmin Battle each had two hits for the Devilettes, which finished with seven. Tenna Patterson (9-16) earned the winning, allowing two earned runs on six hits with one strikeout in five innings on the mound.

The championship game will not be televised, but live stats will be available here
