Devilettes fall 6-3 to TSU in title game

Box Score DECATUR, Ala. -- Texas Southern scored four runs in the bottom half of the sixth inning Sunday to claim a 6-3 win over Mississippi Valley in the SWAC Softball Tournament Championship at Wilson Morgan Park. 

The loss ends the Devilettes' season and haulted their chance at a third straight title. 

After going scoreless in the first three innings, each team put up a run in the fourth inning. Natalia Covarrubias accounted for Valley's first run with a RBI-double before TSU stretched its lead to 2-1 in the fifth with a RBI-single by Krystalani Yockman. 

Afterwards, TSU pulled away from the Devilettes in the bottom of the sixth inning with a four-run output. Yockman had another RBI-single and Brianna Simpson put up a two-run double to give the Lady Tigers a 6-1 lead heading into the top of the seventh. 

MVSU had one last shot in the top of the seventh and scored a pair of runs on a Covarrubias double and Brandi Williams added a RBI-single to left centerfield. But three outs later, TSU had did enough to claim its first SWAC Tournament title. 

Covarrubias led the Devilettes with two hits and a pair of RBIs in the loss. Tenna Patterson started on the mound for Valley and worked the first four innings without giving up any earned runs to go with two strikeouts. In the final game of her career, Cassandra Rivera (5-20) suffered the loss, giving up five earned runs on seven hits in two innings of work.
