GREENWOOD, Miss. -- Mississippi Valley State attempted to mount a second half comeback but fell short Monday night in a 62-45 home loss to Alabama State at the Leflore County Civic Center.
Christina Reed scored in double figures for the third consecutive game, leading the Devilettes with 14 points and nine rebounds. The Indianola, Miss. native converted 7-of-16 shots and contributed a team-high four steals in the loss.
After a tough shooting first half, MVSU converted 41 percent of its shots in the second half but the Lady Hornets edged the Devilettes 31-29 in the second half after leading 31-16 at halftime.
Valley's Kahdejah Stevens tied a career-high in points with 10, a mark she set earlier this season at Memphis. Ashley Beals added seven points and seven rebounds for the Devilettes.
Reed scored the first points of the game to give MVSU an early 2-0 lead, but the Lady Hornets led the rest of the way. Valley cut ASU's lead to 13 in the second half, but the Lady Hornets held off the hard-working Devilettes to close out the game.
Four ASU players scored in double figures, led by Brittney Wright and Jasmine Peeples and Kayla Tucker with 12 each.
MVSU will have another opportunity to get its first SWAC win on Saturday when they travel to face rival Alcorn State. Tipoff is set for 2:30 p.m. in Lorman.
