Prairie View, Texas --- The Devilettes' soccer team gained momentum in Southwestern Athletic Conference play with a 6-1 victory over the Lady Panthers of Prairie View A & M University.
Head Coach Fabio Boateng stated, "The intensity from the team was phenomenal, especially when we conceded as early as the second minute. We need to keep this intensity week in and week out."
PVAMU struck early in the contest with a goal by Clarisa Maldonado on a pass from Alicia Cooper. Defensively, Mississippi Valley buckled down and shut the Lady Panthers out of the remainder of the game.
Nykosi Simmons was on fire for the Devilettes, scoring three of their six goals. She scored her first of the night just under the 6:30 mark, on a pass inside the box from Laadi Issaka. Ernestina Abambila set the net on fire with a free kick goal at the 18:15 point.
Simmons scored the next goal with less than ten minutes remaining in the first half. Amberly Halstead passed the ball to Simmons and she dribbled it inside to score. The Devilettes weren't done scoring, Karenth Zabala scored at the 43:03 mark, with Simmons was credited with the assist due to Zabala scoring on a rebound of her shot.
Simmons scored the first goal (74:15) for MVSU in the second, with an assist from Zabala. Haley Hendricks wrapped scoring, with under three minutes to play, on a cross from Issaka.
Rita Gyasi recorded the win for Mississippi Valley with six saves. She only conceded one goal.
"The defensive unit was fantastic today. Shani Jefferson, Halstead, Alyse Marco, Katelyn Denton, and later Hannah Scott, provided the cover Gyasi has been asking for all season," said Boateng.
MVSU tallied 22 shots, 15 shots on goal, six goals and six assists.
This Sunday the Devilettes will face the Lady Tigers of Texas Southern University at 1 pm in Houston, Texas.
