ITTA BENA, Miss. – The Devilettes of Mississippi Valley State University defeated the Lady Panthers of Philander Smith College, 64-53.
In the opening quarter, MVSU held a slight 7-5 edge over PSC. Ashley Beals paced the team with four points, while Christina Reed added four. Feleshia Walters pulled down two rebounds for Mississippi Valley.
Philander Smith clutched a one point (31-30) advantage over the Devilettes going into the halftime break. Beals continued her crusade for the Devilettes, leading the team with 14-points and eight rebounds. Reed put up 12-points in the second as well.
The third quarter proved to be highly competitive, however MVSU was able to extend their lead. The Devilettes scored 16-points to the Lady Panthers' nine. Beals and Reed scored five-points each.
Mississippi Valley's Beals completed the game with a double double, 29-points, 15 rebounds and one block. Reed also tallied a double double, 19-points, 11 rebounds, seven steals, two assists and one block, while Zemoria Jernihan finished with 15 and two steals.
Head Coach Elvis Robinson stated, "It was a hard fought victory with limited numbers. It required grit and determination in order to secure the win."
