ITTA BENA, Miss. – The Devilettes of Mississippi Valley State University scored a 2-0 shutout victory over the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Vaqueros on Friday night.
A penalty kick with less than four minutes remaining in the first half by Ernestina Abambila, gave the Devilettes a 1-0 edge going into halftime.
With just under five minutes remaining in the contest, Nykosi Simmons broke free in the middle and scored on an open pass from Abambila, to end scoring.
Rita Gyasi took the win (shutout) in the goalie's box, recording five goals on five on target shots by the Vaqueros.
Rio Grande Valley's goalkeeper Erica Gonzalez made four saves, while allowing two goals.
Mississippi Valley tallied 10 shots, with six being on goal. The Vaqueros had nine shots, including five on goal.
Head Coach Fabio Boateng stated, "I thought the first half was very good. We controlled the game but UTRGV came out strong in the second, pinning us to own half. We showed character which has been lacking in the last couple of games."
On Sunday. the Devilettes will travel to Jonesboro, Arkansas, to take on the Red Wolves of Arkansas State University. Gametime is set for 1:00 p.m.
