Devilettes Upset Lady Demons 68-64

NATCHITOCHES, La. – The Devilettes of Mississippi Valley were able to defeat the Lady Demons of Northwestern State University. 68-64, in Natchitoches, Louisiana. Before a crowd of 695, Mississippi Valley shocked Northwestern with their victory, moving to 2-2 on the season.

Head Coach Jessica Kern said, "I am so proud of our efforts tonight. Any road win is a step in the right direction. Although we played dismal in the first half – 50 points in the second, showed our overall growth."

Ashley Beaks scored the opening jumper at 9:40 in the first to take MVSU up 2-0 in the first. A three-pointer by Christina Reed carried the Devilettes up 5-0. With 5:29 remaining in the quarter, Reed dropped another three to give Mississippi Valley a 12-4 advantage over Northwestern State. At the conclusion of the first, was up 16-14, for a two-point advantage.

During the second, the Lady Demons were able to press, scoring the 16-all basket and the go ahead points by the 7:30 mark. The quarter leading into the break was sluggish for both team, with NSU carrying the slight edge into the locker room, 24-18.

The beginning of the third started just as the first, with a layup from Beals, to close the point deficit. A three by Lauren Elliot close the gap to one, 24-23. A slight run by the Lady Demons could have been detrimental, however, MVSU remained focused and steadfast in their pursuits.  By the conclusion of the quarter, Mississippi Valley held a four-point lead.

A heated fourth quarter battle left the Devilettes standing when the smoke cleared. Reed paced the Devilettes with 18-points, four assists, three steals and two rebounds. Beals landed a double-double with 16-points, 15 rebounds and three assists

"Every game we give a "hard hat award" and tonight it went to Nyla Smith, a freshman shooting 100 percent from the charity stripe. With leadership and valuable minutes from Christina Reed and Ashley Beals were able to rally in tough situations. This is a great win for the University" stated Kern.

MVSU travels to Birmingham, Alabama, on November 28th to take on the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Tipoff is set for 7:00 p.m.
