HOUSTON – In the opening half (first and second periods) the Mississippi Valley State Devilettes were outpaced by the Lady Braves of Alcorn State, 37-13.
Zemoria Jerningan and Ashley Beals paced the Devilettes with grit and determination; however their efforts fell short today, as Alcorn advanced in the tournament, after defeating Mississippi Valley 62-43.
Offensively, Mississippi Valley struggled to with ball control and missed out on second chance points due to rebounding. Over the first two quarters, the Devilettes field goal percentage was 22.2 percentage and they were 12.5 from three point range. The ladies were able to snag 19 rebounds, seven offensive and 12 defensive.
The third quarter started with the Lady Braves; however Beals shook off the cold with a sweet jumper to start the Devilettes' scoring.
Within 2 minutes and a quick spin behind her back, Jerningan carried the Devilettes out the teens to a score of 27, leaving a deficit of 21 points.
Entering the fourth, MVSU was down by 24 but they were still in the contest. Felecia Walters scorched the nets for the first basket of the final quarter. Beals earned her final foul, four minutes into the quarter, leaving the Devilettes without her dominant presence.
With 5:43 remaining in the contest, Jerningan switched into SuperDrive and bombed a THREE from down town!
Erica Strothers' three point basket was the final basket of the contest.
