Huntsville– The Mississippi Valley State Devilettes were on the road against the Alabama A & M Lady Bulldogs, yet they hosted a homerun derby in game one of today's doubleheader.
Game One:
Mississippi Valley began their domination in the first inning of the contest and carried it throughout the contest. In the opening inning, MVSU scored two to take an early lead. Deja Talton sent a long ball over the left field wall to get things started for Mississippi Valley, prior to Kailyn Dunn scored on an error by the second baseman.
The Devilettes held the Lady Bullogs scoreless in the first and the second innings. In the third MVSU added an additional two runs. Ikeyia Alexander took the scenic route, sending a ball over the centerfield wall, while scoring Dunn on the play. AAMU scored one run in the second to chip away at the MVSU lead.
Far from done. Mississippi Valley scored another two runs on the sixth inning. Alexander (Ikeyia) posted another homer to place another run up for the Devilettes and she was followed by Alexandra Dobbins' homer to right field.
In the seventh, Dunn singled to second base to bring Annaisa Sanchez on the play.
Game Two:
Alabama A & M dominated the opening inning, scoring six runs and feeling their impeding victory. Mississippi Valley was down but far from out of the contest. With painstaking play execution the Devilettes began to edge their way back into the contest.
In the second inning, MVSU scored three runs to slice the Lady Bulldogs' lead in half. Ikeyia Alexander scored on an error by the left fielder. Sharia Comier scored on a pass ball. Dejanae Gage singled to right field to score Holly Brown.
In the third, the Devilettes tied the score at six by scoring an additional three runs. Alexander homered to center field. Gage reached on a fielder's choice to the shortstop and Comier scored on an error by the catcher. Holly Brown also scored on the play.
In the fourth MVSU scored four runs to Alabama A & M's three. Holly Brown reached first on a third base error and Dunn scored on the play. Alexander came in for the Devilettes. Dobbins stepped into the batter's box and knocked the ball out of the box, scoring a two RBI homer (Brown scored).
In the bottom of the fourth, AAMU scored three runs in their attempt to claw their way back into the contest. Mississippi Valley's 10-run fifth inning was the proverbial straw that broke the camel's back and ended the contest early.
