IRONDALE, Ala. - The Devilettes spearheaded 8-3 over the Lady Golden Lions of the University of Arkansas Pine Bluff to survive day two of the Southwestern Athletic Conference 2016 Softball Tournament.
UAPB struck first in the bottom of the first inning and didn't score again until the bottom of the seventh.
Mississippi Valley set the bats on fire, scoring five runs in the top of the second. With the bases loaded, Sharia Comier walked to score Annaisa Sanchez. A walk by Dejanae Gage pushed Ikeyia Alexander across home plate. Another walk by Jahcenda Garrett scored Holly Brown. Kailyn Dunn singled to center field to score Comier.
In the fourth inning, MVSU scored an additional two runs to increase their lead over the Lady Golden Lions. Deja Talton reached first on a throwing error by the shortstop to score Garrett. Ane Pahulu singled to center field to score Dunn on an unearned run.
In the top of the seventh, Comier displayed her strength with a homer over the right center wall.
UAPB's two runs in the bottom of the seventh fell short in overthrowing the Devilettes.
Rebekah Clinton pitched all seven innings for the win in the pitchers' circle for Mississippi Valley. In seven innings, Clinton only relinquished seven hits, three runs, three errors and one walk.
The Lady Lions, in their attempt to defeat the Devilettes, used three pitchers in the "Win or Go Home," contest. Combined the three gave up eight hits, eight runs, six errors and nine walks.
MVSU will face the Southern University Lady Jaguars on Friday, May 13 at 11:00 AM due to a rain delay.
