Devilettes Battle Lady Jaguars to 51-44 Finish

BATON ROUGE – (Women's Basketball) The Devilettes of Mississippi Valley State were unable to overcome the Lady Jaguars of Southern University, dropping a conference contest 51-4

The Lady Jaguars retained first possession in the opening quarter of the contest. Miaya Crowder scored a jumper to push the SU ahead by two. It was at 7:55 that Kenya Hailey drove into the paint for a layup. It wasn't until 5:15 that another basket was landed, when Southern's Sarai Bissett scored on an in-the-paint layup. Lynshawn Ebron responded with a jumper for Mississippi Valley at 5:01. The first was low scoring, at the end of the quarter the score was 8-6, in favor of the Lady Jaguars.

Ashley Beals opened the second with a layup at 9:45 to tie the contest at eight. With a solid nine minutes remaining, SU went to the line, making one of two, for a Southern one point advantage. Hailey knocked down a three to propel MVSU up 11-9 (8:33). The next basket of the game was a three from Ebron on a fastbreak with 6:56 remaining in the first half. The Lady Jags went on a brief run before the Devilettes' Kenya Arnold scored a layup to close the gap to 16-17. Kristy Parker landed a jumper with 18 seconds to bring the score to 19-20, ending all scoring for the half.

After the half, Hailey was the first to score for Mississippi Valley. Hailey followed with another basket at 7:26 on an assist by Parker. Parker pounded the court for a fast break layup in the paint. Southern was able to score six unanswered points prior to Beals going to the line to score one at the charity stripe. Another seven on the board to Southern University took Mississippi Valley down 35-26. At the conclusion of the quarter, MVSU trailed 35-31.    

The fourth was a difficult battle for the Devilettes as they didn't score until the 5:22 mark, when Nyla Smith knocked down a jumper.

The Devilettes, now 5-11 and 2-3 in conference, will host the Lady Panthers of Prairie View A & M University on Saturday, January 21 at 2:00 pm.
