Devilettes top the Jackson State Lady Tigers 72-61

ITTA BENA, Miss. - The Devilettes took a 10-point lead into halftime in Saturday afternoon's matchup against the Lady Tigers of Jackson State, and held on to win the game 72-61. The R. W. Harrison Complex was filled with noise and excitement as the second quarter started to wind down all the way until the clock struck 00:00 in the fourth.

The Lady Tigers first and last lead was what started the game at 9:13 in the opening quarter, with a basket by Kawaii Perry the Devillettes lead the rest of the way. Junior, LaKendra Bassett took off early, scoring 11 points in the first quarter, and may have been on track for a 40-point night had she played more of the second quarter.

Kenya Arnold and the Devilettes incredible performance held Jackson State's leading scorers, Christina Ellis and Derica Perry to a combined four points in the first half of the game, but missed free throws by Valley kept the Lady Tigers from going into a deeper hole by halftime. The return of Sydney Floyd was felt as she drilled two threes for the Devillettes in the first half that added to the Devillettes' 50% three-point shooting percentage in the half.

The Lady Tigers felt the heat of Walker's World as emotions began to flare resulting in the Lady Tigers racking up more fouls than necessary (14 to 7). These emotions fueled the loud roars of excitement by Valley fans, and was the energy that propelled the Devilettes to their win over in-state conference rival.

The third quarter started with Derica Wiggins draining a three pointer, and what many JSU fans hoped would bring her alive ended up being her only points of the game. The Lady Tigers outscored the Devilettes 18 to 12 in the third, but the grit of the Devilettes and their 15-point lead late in the ball game proved to be too much for the Lady Tigers to fight back from despite their bench contributing 34 points.

Celebratory praises erupted as the Devilettes picked up the win behind LaKendra Bassett's 32 points, 7 rebounds, and 6 steals. Kristy Parker was just shy of a double-double, contributing 17 points and 9 rebounds in the win. MaKayla Bonner rounded out the Devilettes in double digits with 10 points. Both Kenya Arnold and Sydney Floyd had 6.

The Devilettes will be back in action against the Lady Tigers from the west, Grambling State, Monday night with a 5:30 tip-off in the R. W. Harrison Complex.
