Devilettes and Southern draw 0-0

ITTA BENA, Miss. – The full 90 minutes and two overtime periods could not determine a winner Sunday as Mississippi Valley State and Southern settled for a scoreless draw in a hard-fought match by both teams.

Valley's freshman goalkeeper McKenzie McCarthy made nine saves, including two in the second overtime, to record her first collegiate shutout.

The host Devilettes had the best chance to win the match in the first overtime, when Laadi Issaka was brought down inside the penalty area and awarded a penalty kick. Issaka, the team's leading scorer, sent her kick to the lower-right corner of the goal, but a diving save by Southern's Chioma Eriken kept the score 0-0.

Brooklyn Hudson, who plays for Mississippi Valley State's volleyball team, became a two-sport athlete for the Devilettes as she made her soccer debut Sunday, playing 72 of the match's 110 minutes. She nearly won the match for Valley in the last minute of regulation when she got a forwarding pass from Issaka, but Hudson was defended by two Southern players as Eriken made the save.

Valley's starting defense of Adrienne Baker, Stephany Adomako, Erika Smith, and Miaya Richardson, as well as reserve Kristien Lindo, kept Southern's shots off-target. The visiting Jaguars took 21 shots, but only eight were on goal.

The Devilettes return to action Friday when they host Texas Southern. Kickoff is scheduled for 3 p.m.
