DALLAS – The Devilettes of Mississippi Valley State University gave SMU a hard-fought, competitive game Monday in a contest ultimately won by the Mustangs by a score of 62-47.
Kristy Parker (pictured) scored a team-high 11 points and pulled in eight rebounds to lead the Devilettes (0-2). Makayla Bonner came off the bench for the second consecutive game and scored in double-figures, pouring in 10 points for Valley.
Kayla White scored 19 points to lead players scoring in double-figures for SMU (2-0).
Valley fell behind 19-8 at the end of the first quarter, but never let the Mustangs create too much of a cushion in the score. The Devilettes trailed only 33-20 at halftime; the visitors outscored SMU 18-17 in the fourth quarter.
The Devilettes turned the ball over 15 times against their American Athletic Conference hosts Monday, which was a reduction of 12 turnovers from the night before at TCU.
The bigger, longer Mustangs narrowly edged the Devilettes 32-28 in points in the paint. Valley outscored SMU 15-14 in fast-break points.
The Devilettes will have a week to prepare for their next game, a road contest at Austin Peay State in Clarksville, Tenn. Tipoff between the Devilettes and the Governors is scheduled for 7 p.m.
