HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Devilettes of Mississippi Valley State University gave two strong performances at the Lady Eagle Thanksgiving Classic this weekend, hosted by Southern Mississippi.
SOUTHERN MISSISSIPPI 67, MVSU 60
The Devilettes had leads in each of the first three quarters in a narrow loss to Conference USA opponent Southern Miss.
Makayla Bonner came off the MVSU bench to score 15 points on 6-of-12 shooting to lead the Devilettes. Kristy Parker scored 13 points, followed by eight points apiece from Desiray Mosley and Sydnie Ward.
Down five entering the fourth, a Parker lay-up cut the deficit to three with just over six minutes to play. However, the Devilettes went scoreless for the next three minutes, during which time Southern Miss pushed its lead to nine. MVSU – who shot 40.4 (23-of-57) percent from the field compared to Southern Miss' 37.9 percent (22-of-58) clip – got no closer than four the rest of the way.
TROY 75, MVSU 54
LaKendra Bassett and Kristy Parker scored 17 points apiece for Valley in Saturday's game against the Devilettes' Sun Belt Conference opponents.
Valley led 21-15 at the end of the first quarter and shot 54 percent (7 of 13) during the first 10 minutes of the game. However, a 27-point second quarter by Troy put the Trojans in control of the game.
Ronni Williams scored seven points for the Devilettes. Jazmin Holmon pulled in a team-high six rebounds for Valley.
Troy's Japonica James matached Parker and Bassett's output with 17 points for the Trojans.
The Devilettes will have a week to prepare for the next game, as they visit Nicholls State on Saturday, Dec. 1. Tipoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.
