Devilettes narrowly edged 60-57 at Arkansas State

JONESBORO, Ark. – The Devilettes of Mississippi Valley State University turned in one of their strongest showings of the season Thursday in a narrow 60-57 loss at Arkansas State.

Makayla Bonner scored a team-high 15 points to lead three Valley players scoring in double-figures. Kristy Parker scored 13 points and LaKendra Bassett chipped in 10 points and a team-high 10 rebounds for the visitors.

Peyton Martin scored 20 points to lead Arkansas State (5-4), which competes in the Sun Belt Conference.

After trailing by as many 15 points in the third quarter, the Devilettes began to chip away at the Red Wolves' lead midway through the period. Valley scored 10 unanswered points between the 3:28 mark of the third quarter and the 8:04 mark of the fourth quarter to completely erase the ASU lead.

Arkansas State never trailed in the fourth quarter, but Valley would tie the game once more with four minutes to play, and cut the lead to two points or fewer three times before the final buzzer.

Bonner scored her 15 points on 7-of-13 shooting from the floor, while Parker added six assists to her stat line. Erin Smith and Sydnie Ward scored seven points apiece for Valley (1-8).

Valley shot 34 percent (22 of 64) from the floor during the game, while the Red Wolves shot 41 percent (24 of 59).

The Devilettes host their first regular-season home game Monday, Dec. 17, when they host North Alabama. Tipoff is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
