GRAMBLING, La. – Mississippi Valley's women's basketball team wrapped up their two-game weekend trip facing the third ranked Lady Tigers of Grambling State University. Early offensive struggles ultimately led to the Devilettes dropping the contest 64-55.
Grambling's shooters came out in fire in the opening period. They were able to outpace Mississippi Valley, 23-9 in the first ten-minutes.
It was in the second period that MVSU was able to slow the Lady Tiger's offense, holding them to 11-points, while scoring seven.
Down 34-16 at the half, the Devilettes had a tough road ahead in the final two quarters. LaKendra Bassett and Makayla Bonner paced MVSU with five-points each in the first twenty.
Reentering the court, Mississippi Valley appeared poised and ready for action. Their energy level improved from the opening half and the offense improved their shooting.
The third and fourth quarters each ended favor of the Devilettes. In the third, MVSU outpaced GSU 14-10 and 25-20 in the fourth.
LaKendra Basset continued to be a force on the court tonight with 13-points, four rebounds, four assists and three steals. Kenya Arnold added 13-points, eight rebounds and three steals; while Makala Bonner finished with 11-points, four rebounds.
MVSU will travel to Pine Bluff, Arkansas, to face the Lady Lions of Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Saturday, March 3
rd. Game time is scheduled for 5:00 pm.
