Deep bench sends Mercer past Valley

MACON, Ga. – Mercer's roster depth proved to be the factor Sunday as the Bears scored four second-half goals en route to a 5-0 win over Mississippi Valley State.

The Devilettes (0-2-0) were level with their hosts for nearly a half-hour before Mercer's Alina McCue opened the scoring in the 29th minute. The score would remain 1-0 until the 57th minute.

Valley gave a solid effort as the Devilettes used only two substitutes throughout the match. Mercer was aided by 13 different substitutes during the contest, as 24 players saw action for the Bears.

McKennzie McCartney started in goal for Valley and made four saves. Freshman keeper Myisha Butts relieved her in the second half, and made nine saves.

The Devilettes open a six-game homestand Friday when they host Nicholls State. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.
