ITTA BENA, Miss. – The Devilettes of Mississippi Valley State stunned California Baptist with a goal late in the second half and then denied their guests a match-winner in the overtime periods Saturday to draw 1-1 with the visiting Lancers.
Laadi Issaka leveled the score in the 81st minute when she received a long pass near the goal box from Stephany Adomako and fired a shot past CBU goalkeeper Romy Salvador into the lower-left corner of the goal. It was Issaka's team-leading sixth goal of the season.
California Baptist (4-1-1) was denied a second consecutive win in Mississippi and its second straight win over a Southwestern Athletic Conference opponent, having defeated Jackson State 4-0 two days prior.
Valley salvaged the tie despite being outshot in the match 30-7. The Lancers held a 15-7 advantage in shots on goal, with Valley goalkeeper Myisha Butts making 14 saves as she improved her season record to 1-0-1.
The Iron Devilettes used only 12 players in the match and withstood chance after chance from California Baptist. In addition to outshooting Valley, CBU also held a 13-1 advantage in corner kicks.
A rainy, soggy night in the Delta helped slow down the Lancers, as the long grass and wet field stymied several offensive attacks. Valley's goal came off a set piece, with Adomako finding Issaka on a free kick from 40 yards out.
CBU opened the scoring in the 69th minute when Deserae Felix scored her third goal of the season.
The Devilettes' defensive strategy was further put to the test late in the first overtime period when Hannah Crise was sent off with her second yellow card of the match. Playing the last 11 minutes of the match down a player, Valley kept its visitors from getting many more solid looks at the goal.
Valley returns to action Friday when they host Mississippi University for Women at the MVSU Soccer Field. The match is scheduled for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
