ITTA BENA, Miss. (Jan. 12, 2019) – Two Devilettes reached double-figure scoring in an 80-60 loss to Alabama A&M on Saturday inside the Harrison HPER Complex. Junior Erin Smith finished with a team-high 16 points knocking down a season-best four three-pointers off the Devilettes bench while senior Makayla Bonner netted 14 points hitting seven shots from the field.
Alabama A&M (7-7, 2-1) shot 51 percent from the field (31-60) compared to 39 percent (25-64) by Mississippi Valley State (2-11, 1-1). Smith reached double-digit scoring for the second time this season making six of her nine field goals including four of six from long range. AAMU had four scorers in double-figures led by Nigeria Jones' game-high 21 points.
The Devilettes trailed 26-14 after a strong start by the Bulldogs in the opening period. The Bulldogs led by as many as 14 points in the second quarter before the Devilettes came storming back. MVSU responded with an efficient second quarter outscoring the Bulldogs 17-8. In the final minute of the half, freshman Sydnie Ward and Smith each drained a three-pointer cutting the deficit to 34-31 at halftime. Smith finished the first half with a team-high 10 points while Bonner added eight points.
AAMU pushed their lead back to double-digits (46-31) with a 12-0 run to start of the third period. With only four made baskets in the quarter by MVSU, the Bulldogs carried a 59-42 advantage into the fourth quarter. Bonner and Smith both scored six points in the fourth quarter, but AAMU maintained their double-digit lead and cruised to an 80-60 win over the Devilettes.
MVSU's LaKendra Bassett recorded a season-high 11 rebounds and led her team with three assists. Senior Desiray Mosley had eight points while Ward finished with seven points.
MVSU will host Alabama State on Monday, Jan. 14 at 5:30 p.m. in the Harrison HPER Complex.
