LORMAN, Miss. (January 19, 2019) – Senior Desiray Mosley posted a season-high 14 points, her second double-digit outing of the season, with four rebounds, four assists, and three steals, however, it was not enough as the Mississippi Valley State women's basketball team (3-12, 2-2 SWAC) came up short to Alcorn State, 73-63, Saturday afternoon.
Mosley went 6-for-10 from the field and was joined by senior LaKendra Bassett's 10 points and season-high seven assists in double-figure scoring. Freshman Sydnie Ward had nine points to lead the bench scoring, senior Kristy Parker had seven points with five assists and junior Nyla Smith grabbed a team-high six rebounds and blocked two shots.
Alcorn State (3-14, 2-3 SWAC) had four scorers in double-figures led by De'Asia Brown's 17 points. Jamaysha Bernard notched a double-double of 15 points and 17 rebounds, while Kirdis Clark (15 points) and Diamond Hall (12 points) led the bench scoring.
In the first two minutes of the game, Mosley and senior Erin Smith both hit three-pointers pushing the Devilettes to an early 10-2 lead. Junior Angelica Darcus had eight first-half points making all four of her attempts and Mosley contributed seven points. In the final moments of the second period, Parker came up with a steal and Bassett made the layup putting MVSU in the lead 38-37 at the break.
At the 4:10 mark in the third period, Ward had scored five straight points for the Devilettes putting MVSU back in front, 50-47. She drained a three-pointer and then finished a fast break layup off an assist from Mosley. MVSU struggled the rest of the period missing five straight shots as Alcorn built a 58-53, advantage heading into the fourth quarter. The Devilettes went 5-for-22 in the final frame and missed all nine attempts from three-point territory. The Lady Braves built a double-digit lead and held on for a 73-63 victory at home.
Overall, MVSU finished the afternoon shooting 27-of-72 (37.5 percent) and 5-of-24 (20.8 percent) from beyond the arc, while the Lady Braves shot 28-of-61 (45.9 percent) from the field and 8-of-18 (44.4 percent) from long range.
MVSU set new season-highs with 72 field goal attempts, 24 three-point attempts and 19 assists against the Lady Braves. Alcorn held the Devilettes to a season-low eight free-throw attempts and four made free-throws which is their second-lowest total.
MVSU heads to Baton Rouge, La. on Monday, Jan. 21 at the F.G. Clark Activity Center facing the Lady Jaguars of Southern (6-9, 3-1 SWAC) at 5:30 p.m.
