Devilettes Basketball Falls to Austin Peay

ITTA BENA, Miss. - Ayonna Cotten finished with a season-high 24 points draining five three-pointers, but Mississippi Valley State women's basketball loss 100-82 to Austin Peay Monday in the R.W. Harrison HPER Complex.

MVSU falls to 0-4 overall record and Austin Peay moves to 3-1. Three players scored in double figures led by Cotten's 24. Shelli Thigpen scored 15 and Sydnie Ward had 12 off the MVSU bench.

KEY GAME STATS
  • Ayonna Cotten recorded a season-high 24 points on 8-of-13 field goals made. Cotten dished out four assists, grabbed three rebounds, and had one steal.
  • Shelli Thigpen's 15 points came on 6-of-12 made field goals and 3-of-5 made free-throws.
  • Sydnie Ward had a season-high 12 points, four assists in 24 minutes off the bench.
  • Diamond Wraggs had eight rebounds while scoring nine points and Ronni Williams also scored nine points, with a season-high seven rebounds and five assists.
  • Austin Peay's Arie Gonzalez-Varner netted a double-double of 21 points with 13 rebounds. Maggie Knowles added 16 points and Kasey Kidwell had 15 points.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Austin Peay went on a 16-0 run at the start of the third quarter and never looked back. MVSU committed five turnovers in the first two minutes of the quarter falling behind, 64-48.
  • Thigpen ended the scoring drought for the Devilettes with a jumper followed by a three-pointer by Cotten at the 7:00 minute mark.
  • The Devilettes cut the deficit to eight (73-65) with under a minute left in the third quarter which was the closest they would come down the stretch. Thigpen's layup and then a pair of free-throws by Cotten brought the game to under double-digits.
  • The Governors dominated the final period and held on to their large advantage for an 18-point margin.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS
  • MVSU shot 51.6 percent (32-62) from the field and 47.1 percent (8-17) from three-point range compared to 50 percent (36-72) from the field and 29.2 percent (7-24) from long range by the Governors.
  • APSU forced MVSU into 26 turnovers and dominated the attempts from the line shooting 21-of-28 free-throws while the Devilettes went 10-for-23.
  • The Governors outscored MVSU 50-34 in the second half alone after Austin Peay took a 50-48 lead into halftime.
  • MVSU had several season-high marks against Austin Peay: made 32 field goals, shot 51.6 percent from the field, made eight three-point field goals, had 14 assists, and 23 attempted free-throws.

  • The Devilettes head to Hattiesburg, Miss. for the Southern Mississippi Thanksgiving Classic on Nov. 29-30. MVSU will face Southern Miss. at 4 p.m. on Nov. 29.
